Burghead attracts many visitors each year thanks to its importance as a major Pictish site of historic interest. The Iron Age Fort on the headland is thought to be the oldest Pictish fort in Scotland.
The port is still very much a ‘working’ harbour with fishing boats still landing their catches. Tourism in the town has been very much enhanced by the development of the Burghead Visitor Centre which guides visitors through the stunning history of the area from 400AD to the present day.
Another major attraction sees thousands flock to Burghead every January for the ‘Burning of the Clavie’, a fire festival that is unique to the town.
